UNLOC PhD student to undertake internship at NICT, Japan
07 July, 2017
Daniel Elson, UCL Optical Networks Group (ONG), will join NICT (National Institute of Information and Communications Technology) from September 2017 to January 2018.
Daniel, who is in the final year of his PhD, will undertake an internship in nonlinear impairment mitigation for wideband transmission in single-core and multicore fibre. Daniel hopes to bring his knowledge of nonlinearity mitigation techniques together with NICT’s expertise in multicore fibres to investigate the potential of multicore fibres in the nonlinear (high optical power) regime.
Daniel will join UCL ONG alumnus Dr Ben Puttnam; Ben sits within the Photonic Network System Laboratory at NICT. This deepening relationship with NICT opens up the possibility for larger collaborations in the future.
NICT have awarded Daniel with an Internship Research Fellowship, which provides funding to cover travel and subsistence throughout his internship.
Daniel is looking forward to making use of his Japanese language skills while working in Japan. A focus on collaboration in the optical communications industry in Japan will allow Daniel to make valuable contacts in international companies such as NTT and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories.
Daniel's PhD is funded by the EPSRC with an iCASE award by BBC R&D. Daniel’s PhD supervisor at UCL is Prof Polina Bayvel.
